Book Review: Calm My Anxious Heart (NavPress) by Linda Dillow (Author of best seller Creative Counterpart)

‘Calm My Anxious Heart’ is about CONTENTMENT – contentment with our circumstances, roles, relationships, etc. and how anxiety can rob us of this contentment. It gives ideas how we can learn to be content through trusting God with the WHAT IFS in our lives, with the IF ONLYS and the WHYS.

In the beginning chapter, she cited the example of a missionary wife who had lived in Africa for 52 years where the temperature can go up to so high that she had to bring the thermometer inside because it couldn’t register pass 120 degrees without breaking. After she passed away, her daughter found in the old diary of this dear lady her prescription for contentment which she copied from a book she read:

1.	Never allow yourself to complain about anything, not even the weather.
2.	Never picture yourself in any other circumstances or someplace else.
3.	Never compare your lot with another’s.
4.	Never allow yourself to wish this or that had been otherwise.
5.	Never dwell on tomorrow.

2 verses which she shared caught my attention as verses which had helped her move from control to contentment:

1. Phil.4:13(Wuest) I am strong for all things in the One who constantly infuses strength in me.
2. 1 Tim.6:15 (Philips) God… is the Blessed Controller of all things, the King over all kings, the Master of all masters.

The following story of 2 monks helped her to put her control vs. God’s control into perspective:
“I need oil” said an ancient monk, so he planted an olive sapling. “Lord,” he prayed, “it needs rain that its tender roots may drink and swell. Send gentle showers”. And the Lord sent gentle showers. “Lord, “prayed the monk, “my tree needs sun. Send sun, I pray Thee”. And the sun shone, gilding the dripping clouds. “Now frost, my Lord, to brace its tissues,” cried the monk. And behold, the little tree stood sparkling with frost, but at evening, it died.

Then the monk sought the cell of a brother monk and told his strange experience. “I , too, planted a little tree,” he said, “and see! it thrives well. But I entrusted my tree to its God. He who made it knows better what it needs than a man like me. I laid no conditions. I fixed not ways and means. “Lord, send what it needs,” I prayed, “storms and sunshine, wind, rain or frost. Thou hast made it and Thou dost know.”

She also shared practical ideas of how to put Phil.4:6-9 into practice in order to maintain contentment and not give in to anxiety or the need to take control.

1.	Choosing to give our anxieties to God.
2.	Choosing to pray specifically.
3.	Choosing to be thankful.
4.	Choosing to dwell on the positives.
5.	Finally, to keep practicing the above.

The book ends with 12 weeks of Bible Studies based on the 12 chapters in the book.

(Linda and her husband, Jody, have lived in Europe and Asia and have been involved in international ministry more than 20 years. A highly requester speaker for retreats and bible studies, she is also the author of the best seller, Creative Counterparts, which has sold more than 300,000 copies. She is the mother of 4 grown children and a grandmother).
